Biting the tops off burritos – “Behind the Scenes” with Kang and Daddy Donkey
About two months ago I asked Kang Leong, a.k.a LondonEater, to take some photographs for my client Daddy Donkey. We had some studio shots of the food taken previously, but both Joel (the owner) and I also wanted some images that were a little less styled and little more streetfood-esque. We needed something that would best show the atmosphere of Daddy D, from the food to the customers, to the staff and the market.
I worked with Kang a little bit in the past, but asked him to do the job based largely on his online portfolio of food images because they are all gorgeous and most (if not all) of them are done outside of the studio in restaurants, events and markets he visits.
Food photo shoots are one of my favourite parts of working in food PR, especially on this day because I got to spend about an hour biting the tops off multiple burritos for the perfect open-burrito shot. Aside from the food shots, Kang also ran around and squeezed his way through the huge queue of customers (and it was a Friday!) and even in between the staff inside the van to get some incredible images. I followed him around, carried his camera bag and did a (tiny) bit of bossing, and at the end of the day we had hundreds of photos.
We chose a good handful of images to use for Daddy D, but on the side Kang put together a really cool project of the extra photos called “Behind the Scenes at Daddy Donkey.” I wanted to share this with you because I think it’s a great idea and not only shows his talent but what it’s like to be a customer and a team member working for a streetfood van in a busy London market.
I have also recently worked with Kang on a photo shoot for Pho, which is launching a new website very soon.
